Bio

John has been a CEO for 15 years and has raised over $150M in venture capital. Most recently, John was the CEO of The Pro’s Closet, where he helped scale revenue from $28M to $72M in his first two years. Previously, he was the Founder/CEO of Craftsy, which was acquired by NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. Craftsy (later rebranded as bluprint) grew from an idea to over 300 employees and $400M in cumulative revenue. Prior to founding Craftsy, John held executive roles at eBay and HomeAdvisor. He joined eBay in 1999, as Head of Strategy & BD for eBay Motors, helping grow it into a $14 billion a year GMS global business. Before eBay, John spent 6 years at General Electric, graduating from GE’s Financial Management program and Corporate Audit Staff. John received his MBA from The University of Michigan and his BA from Colgate University, where he double-majored in History and English. John is based in Denver, CO, where he teaches at the University of Colorado Business School, with a focus on the role Marketing plays in corporate strategy, and how marketing org. design and spend levels/metrics translate through the income statement, balance sheet, and ultimately to sustainable profitable growth.

Three way tie: Ljubljana, Slovenia; Sydney, Australia; Kenya
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy time with family, teaching, cycling, skiing, live music, University of Illinois basketball, and trying to get better at guitar.
What is the oddest job you’ve ever had?
It’s odd to no one who grew up in certain parts of the Midwest, but I spent a summer corn detasseling and bean walking. Hardest jobs I’ve ever had.
